Danny Boy – Steam Drifter

Danny Boy is a representative model of a typical Herring Drifter of the early part of the 20th century, and is based on a variety of builders drawings.
Prototype history (click)
Danny Boy, is not based on any one individual drifter but on the 1917 Admiralty Standard Steam Drifter, designed by Alex Hall, Shipbuilders, Aberdeen and built of steel. Many Standard Drifters were built at shipyards nationwide. After WW1 these drifters were sold and used for herring fishing, mostly on the East Coast of the UK. Most post WW1 Drifters were built as Standard Drifters. The Drifters were all individuals with their own characteristics. The last Steam Drifter built in the UK was by Alex Hall of Aberdeen in 1932 The Steam Drifter era sadly came to an end by 1960. Danny Boy, recaptures the spirit of that bygone Steam Drifter era.
